Volcanology Weblog

ASP is a collaborative research enterprise among academics and graduate students in the Geology Department and microbiologists in the School of Biological Sciences.  Its primary purpose is to characterize modern and ancient hot spring settings in terms of their mineralogy, ecology, paleoenvironments, geochemistry and microbiology.  Current research is supported by the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund (K.A. Campbell  and P.R.L. Browne, PI’s; S. Turner, AI) to investigate biosignals and diagenesis of Miocene to Recent siliceous sinter in the North Island, New Zealand.

Seeks understanding of all volcanoes through documenting their eruptions (small as well as large) during the past 10,000 years. Integrates observations of contemporary activity with historical and geological records and maintains comprehensive computer databases and an archive of relevant maps, photos and documents. Provides access to the full texts of article appearing in the Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network. Posts reports of current and expected volcanic activity worldwide and links to many other general and regional volcanology sites.
